Downtown Roanoke's historic First National Exchange Bank, built in 1912, is one of the city's most ambitious adaptive reuse projects: an upscale boutique hotel, music venue, and restaurant. The marble exterior and multi-story banking hall still read as they did in 1912, but inside, the spaces now serve a different purpose: hotel rooms replace bank offices, a concert hall occupies the ornate two-story bank lobby, and a restaurant fills a modern atrium addition. Architectural details, including spiral staircases and original woodwork, were preserved and woven into the guest experience.
While at 3North, Katie Harrigan worked alongside developer Hist:Re Partners to guide the project through architecture and interior design, ensuring every intervention honored the neoclassical bones of the structure while creating a guest experience rooted in discovery. The result is a property where the architecture itself becomes the narrative.

The Promissory unites hospitality, music, and cuisine at the intersection of history and culture in downtown Roanoke. Below street level, the original bank vault has been converted into a speakeasy-style lounge, its heavy doors and intricate metalwork now framing a green room for performers. The two-story bank lobby, with its adorned walls and coffered ceilings, serves as the concert hall and event venue. A 1960s addition was partially removed to create a four-story atrium that brings natural light into the guest rooms above and provides a dramatic setting for the restaurant below. Upper-floor offices have been converted into 27 oversized boutique guest rooms with original architectural details alongside modern finishes. Hospitality, dining, and performance, under one roof, set against the preserved history of Roanoke's bygone days of banking.
